Exploring cultures
through food

I make daily video content about cities, how they eat, what that eating means, and what it reveals about the places and people behind it. Trained as a food writer, educated as an urban planner, currently eating my way through Mexico.

What I Make

Gastronomic culture, and beyond

My content centers on gastronomic culture: how food is made, sold, eaten, and what it says about the city around it. But the lens extends further, to the streets, rituals, and rhythms that give food its meaning. Below is a sense of the range. It's not a fixed menu.

Street Food

Food in Context

A dish, a vendor, a neighborhood, and what the combination reveals about how a city feeds itself. Less cultural lecture, more curious observation about how something exists within a given gastronomy.

Tradition & Ritual

Cultural Moments

Why certain foods appear at certain times, and what the celebrations around them actually mean. The calendar of eating that marks a culture's year, with the context most people never get.

Destination

Regional Food Recap

A personal record of eating through a place, companion content to my Substack series Derek Eats, which goes deeper on context and recommendations for each city covered.

Urban Fabric

Cities as Text

Observations of what makes up a given city, read through its built environment. Where the urban planner in me shows up most clearly, and where food culture and physical place overlap.

Series & Projects

Going deeper, again and again

Some stories are too good for a single video. My series work shows what happens when curiosity compounds, returning to the same dish, neighborhood, or concept until something genuinely interesting emerges. These span active projects and proven concepts that show the range of what's possible with a dedicated brand partner.

Ongoing Series

Chilaquiles Gone Wild

Mexico City's most iconic breakfast, reimagined. Each episode features a local spot with a genuinely unexpected interpretation, always rooted in cultural context, never forced.

Traveling Series

Marquesita Diaries

Started in Mérida, a different marquesita combination every day. Then CDMX, then Oaxaca. The format travels wherever the dish does, exploring how a single street food transforms across cities.

Recurring Format

Martes de Taco

A weekly taco feature exploring Mexico's full taco spectrum, from street corner classics to regional rarities. A repeatable format built for audience rhythm and brand partnership.

Dessert Series

Sweet Endings

Paletas, pastries, cookies, and everything sweet in between. Every city has a dessert culture, and this is where I document it.

Beyond Just Eating

Getting hands-on with food & culture

Food content doesn't stop at the plate. I'm building out a portfolio of participatory, experiential content, learning how things are made, exploring landscapes and communities that shape what people eat, and following curiosity wherever it leads.

🏺

Learning Through Experience

Working directly with local makers, artisans, and producers to understand how regional goods are made, from the technique to the tradition behind it.

⛰️

Nature & Pueblo Exploration

Hiking, small towns, markets off the tourist trail. The places where food culture and landscape overlap in ways that don't show up on most feeds.

🌍

Global Exploration

The same lens, brought somewhere new. Future coverage will extend well beyond Mexico, following food culture into cities with rich stories and room for more English-language voices telling them.

Platforms & Reach

TikTok-first, expanding everywhere

TikTok drives the majority of my reach and is where growth has been strongest, but the platform strategy goes beyond a single channel. Instagram provides a complementary visual presence for Reels and curated posts, while Substack turns destination coverage into long-form guides with lasting search value. The three platforms are designed to work together as a cohesive content ecosystem — short-form video builds awareness, Instagram reinforces it, and Substack deepens it. As production scales into new destinations across Europe and beyond, that ecosystem will only expand.

Who's Watching

A highly engaged international audience

My audience primarily spans English-speaking food and travel enthusiasts across the US and Mexico, a dual-market reach that's rare for a single creator. The 25-44 core is the sweet spot most brands target, and at 10%+ engagement, this is an audience that actively participates rather than just scrolls.

Let's make something worth watching

The best brand content disappears into the story. You barely notice the partnership because the subject is genuinely interesting. That's what I build.

Potential Partnership Opportunities

Restaurant, market, and producer features woven into destination content
Custom collaborative series built around your brand's food or place story
Tourism board and destination marketing campaigns
Food and beverage brand integrations in authentic cultural context
Hands-on experience and making content, including classes, production visits, and artisan features
Substack destination guides with long-form brand presence
Custom formats, open to proposals that don't fit any of the above
Dual-Market Reach
41.7% US and 40.3% Mexico gives brands rare simultaneous access to two major English-speaking markets through a single creator.
High Engagement
10%+ average engagement on TikTok, well above industry benchmarks, meaning your message reaches people who are actively paying attention.
Series-First Thinking
Multiple recurring series create natural, repeatable partnership structures with built-in audience expectation and ongoing exposure.
